5 Teaching Strategies You Can Use to Help Struggling Students

No one is born smart, but we can agree on the fact that some children learn quickly compared to others. It is not that those quick learners are magical creatures; everyone had to struggle at some point in their lives. For struggling students, it is the responsibility of the instructor to push them to explore their minds and invoke abilities in them.

Every classroom has a dynamic environment, leading students from different backgrounds and mindsets. Therefore, being an effective teacher, it is a requirement to carry out creative and experimental strategies to meet every student needs. We have conducted research and come up with these five teaching strategies to benefit your struggling students.

1. Conceptual Learning:

An effective teacher will always want his students to invoke their critical thinking to make reasons with concepts. Cramming concepts is not a way to go. Students need opportunities to implement their theories. Get help from student management system software for creating thought-provoking quizzes and assignments. Design such activities that solicit their understanding. Tell them a situation, so that they can summarize and draw conclusions.

2. Visualizing:

It is proven by research that the visualizing helps us to grasp and understand the most abstract of concepts. Visualization assists us to retain the information for a lengthy period. Introduce technology to visualize theories, use flow charts, concept map for constructive learning. Images, videos, animations, and even field trips will prove beneficial in the learning process.

3. Divide and Conquer:

The method is, especially for struggling students or anyone who is having difficulty in learning. As the name suggests, you need to divide a concept or theory into small chunks to get the bigger picture. The small parts of the bigger picture will create a clear path for understanding the whole idea. The new name of this method is Scaffolding. Instructors are using this method for as long as I can remember for constructing a logical understanding of complex concepts.

4. Students Presentations:

You never know how well you know your topic until you are standing in front of a class and trying to explain it. This method has become a creative way for students to improvise their concepts. Presentation will not only encourage students but also boost their confidence level. You can carry out this activity in a group or peer form also. It will also help students interact with each other and learn unique ways of presenting.

5. Develop Skills:

Learning will never be beneficial until your students can implement it. Prepare students to brainstorm the given topic and improve their skill set. Getting your student’s only attention is the way for constructive learning. Give practical projects so students can practice and implement concepts. Emphasize on creativity and high intellectual ability of projects. The instructor should monitor the progress of every project and guide students accordingly.

In conclusion, motivation and encouragement are compulsory for the growth of potential learning. Talk through your struggling students by using a combination of teaching strategies.
